X-MEN

The heroes and villains of X-Men all have a unique mutant power that makes them hated by the rest of the world for being different. They were the best comic books and animation of the 1990s. I loved Jim Lee's art and wanted figures that looked like they jumped off the page.

ROBOTECH

Transforming vehicles, alien invasions, main characters dying, amazing animation and combining 3 different anime into one made Robotech a unique show to watch after school. Making flat cardboard transform and still look right was always a fun challenge.

STAR WARS

The battle between the Rebel Alliance and the Galactic Empire a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away. These were the last figures designed as my drawing skills improved over a few years to make them look more realistic.

History

The cardboard action figures shown were made more than 30 years ago between the years 1990-1996, mostly during the summers that I had off from college. They’ve been in storage for many years but I’m still happy with them after all this time.

Action figures from the major toy companies during the '90s were not as detailed or super articulated like they are today with Marvel Legends, Star Wars Black Series, Hot Toys, and Mondo. Even though I loved the vintage toys, most figures looked very simple based on the manufacturing technology of the time, which led me to make my own. The vintage toys are shown in each gallery as a comparison to what was available at the time these cardboard figures were made.

Is there really a comparison between a 3D action figure and a 2D articulated cardboard figure? No, but they look great on a shelf.

Why cardboard? It was cheap, available, easily cut, bendable and sturdy.

Each custom action figure was made from cardboard, acid-free paper, colored pencils, black marker, clear Con-Tact vinyl, transparent tape, metal fasteners, velcro, patience, and plenty of time.

*All of the handmade cardboard action figures featured are based on popular trademarked properties. Any use of trademarked names are only for informational purposes. X-MEN®, ROBOTECH®, STAR WARS® and all indicia, characters, and logos are owned by their respective companies. No relationship is implied. This site is for non-commercial fan use only.
